What is a CBCT Scan?
Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) is anadvanced dental and maxillofacial
imaging modalitythat produces high-resolution three-dimensional (3D)images of the
teeth, jaws, nerve pathways, andcraniofacial structures.
Unlike conventional two-dimensional imaging such aspanoramic or intraoral radiographs,
CBCT allowsmultiplanar reconstruction (axial, coronal, sagittal) and3D volumetric
visualization. It is particularly usefulwhen conventional imaging does not providesufficient
diagnostic detail.
CLINICAL APPLICATIONS
1. Implant Planning
- Assessment of bone volume, density, and morphology
- Evaluation of proximity to vital structures (e.g., inferior alveolar nerve, maxillary sinus)
2. Endodontics
- Evaluation of complex tooth & canal morphology
- Detection of root fractures
- Localization of periapical pathology
3. Orthodontics
- Panoramic and cephalometric reconstructions
- Airway analysis and evaluation of maxillo-mandibular discrepancies
- Pre-orthodontic evaluation for MARPE (Mini-screw assisted Rapid MaxillaryExpansion)
4. TMJ Evaluation
- TMJ Morphology
- Arthritic/Erosive changes in the bony components of TMJ
- Developmental variations
5. Maxillofacial Surgery
- Localization of impacted teeth
- Pre-surgical planning for orthognathic surgery
- Trauma: Detailed visualization of facial bone fractures
6. Maxillofacial Pathology
- Cysts, benign tumours, and other jaw lesions: evaluation of extend, internal structure, and proximity to vital structures
7. ENT
- Evaluation of Maxillary sinus pathology
- Evaluation of Nasal Cavity and Deviation in nasal septum
- Assessment of sinus floor prior to sinus augmentation procedures
