Tooth gems and dental jewellery in Dubai
A small crystal or gold stud bonded to your enamel by a licensed cosmetic dentist. No drilling, no enamel removed, and it can be taken off whenever you want.
What a tooth gem actually is
A tooth gem is a decorative crystal, gemstone or gold stud bonded to the front surface of a tooth using dental adhesive. The bonding sits on the enamel surface only. Nothing is drilled, no tooth structure is removed, and the tooth underneath is unchanged when the gem comes off.
Gems are typically 1.8 mm to 3 mm across and under a millimetre thick, so they sit flush enough that most people stop noticing them within a day or two.
Types we place
Crystal
Clear or coloured. The most common choice, and the easiest to remove and change later.
Gold stud
Solid gold in a range of shapes. Heavier and more visible than a crystal.
Gemstone
Custom stones and multi-gem placements, discussed at consultation.
Which tooth, and how many
Most gems go on an upper lateral incisor or canine, because those teeth show naturally when you smile without being the first thing someone looks at. We check your smile line at the consultation and mark the position before bonding anything.
Single gem
One stone on a lateral incisor or canine. The most requested placement.
Paired
Matching gems left and right for a symmetrical result.
Cluster
Several small stones in a pattern on one tooth. Takes longer and costs more.
How the appointment runs
01
Check and clean
We examine the tooth for decay or wear, then polish the surface.
02
Isolate and etch
The tooth is isolated to keep it dry, then lightly etched so the adhesive grips.
03
Bond the gem
Dental-grade adhesive is applied and the gem is positioned.
04
Cure and check
The bond is light cured, the edges are smoothed and your bite is checked.
Salon gems compared with dentist-applied gems
Tooth gems are widely offered outside dental clinics, including at beauty salons and through home kits. The difference is not the gem itself, it is what holds it on and who checked the tooth first.
Salon or home kit
- Craft or nail adhesive on enamel
- No isolation, so saliva weakens the bond
- Tooth not examined for decay beforehand
- Plaque collects under a poorly sealed gem
- Gems that detach can be swallowed or inhaled
- No safe removal if it fails
At a licensed dental clinic
- Dental bonding agent, the same class used for fillings
- Proper isolation keeps the field dry
- Tooth assessed before anything is bonded
- Edges sealed and smoothed so plaque doesn't sit
- Bite checked before you leave
- Removal and polishing done here if you want it off
When we'd treat something else first
A gem bonds to healthy enamel. If the tooth or gums need attention, we deal with that first and place the gem afterwards.
Active decay on the tooth
Bonding over decay traps it. The cavity is treated first.
Untreated gum inflammation
We stabilise gum health before adding anything to the smile line.
Fixed braces in place
Space and access are limited. Usually better after debonding.
Heavy grinding or enamel wear
Worn enamel holds a bond poorly. We assess this at the consultation.
Whitening and veneers
Whiten first, then place the gem
Enamel under a bonded gem won’t lighten with the rest of the tooth. If you’re planning whitening, do it first and place the gem afterwards, otherwise you may see a lighter patch when the gem comes off. See our teeth whitening page.
Gems on veneers and crowns
Porcelain bonds differently from natural enamel and needs a different surface preparation. It can be done, but it is assessed case by case. See our veneers page.
The first 48 hours, and after
First 48 hours
Avoid biting directly with that tooth and skip very hard or sticky food while the bond settles.
Daily cleaning
Brush as normal but gently around the gem, and floss carefully so you don’t catch its edge.
If it comes loose
Don’t try to re-stick it yourself. Book in and we’ll check the tooth and re-bond it.
