What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers the whole visible part of a tooth. Unlike a filling, it wraps around the outside to restore a weakened tooth’s shape, strength and appearance.

When do you need a crown?

Your dentist may recommend a crown when a tooth is too damaged for a filling alone, for example:

  • a large filling with little natural tooth left
  • a cracked, broken or badly worn tooth
  • a discoloured or misshapen tooth that whitening or veneers cannot fix

Types of dental crowns

Type Strength Appearance Best for
Zirconia Very high Natural Back teeth, people who grind
All-ceramic (e.g. E.max) Good Most lifelike Front teeth
Porcelain-fused-to-metal High Natural; a dark gum line can show over time Back teeth, bridges
Gold Highest Metallic Back molars

Acer Dental Clinic offers ceramic, Zirconia crowns are very durable and can handle heavier biting forces than other ceramic crowns, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

What happens at each visit

Visit 1: Examination. Your dentist checks the tooth with X-rays, and a 3D CBCT scan if needed. An intraoral scan lets you preview the crown, and you choose the material and shade together.

Visit 2: Preparation (about an hour). The tooth is numbed, old fillings and decay are removed, and a thin outer layer is shaped to make room for the crown. A final scan goes to the lab, and you leave with a temporary crown.

Visit 3: Fitting. A few days later, the temporary comes off and you see the permanent crown in place before it is fixed. Your dentist checks your bite, then cements the crown permanently.

Aftercare and lifespan

A crown typically lasts 5 to 15 years, and often longer with good care. The tooth beneath it can still decay, so brush twice daily, floss along the gum line and keep six-monthly check-ups. If you grind your teeth, a night guard protects your crown. Mild sensitivity for a few days after fitting is normal.

How much does a dental crown cost in Dubai?

The price depends on the material, any treatment needed first, and how many teeth need crowns. Many UAE insurance plans partly cover crowns as a restorative treatment. [CLIENT TO CONFIRM: AED starting prices.]

Frequently asked questions

Does getting a crown hurt?

No. The tooth is fully numbed, so you feel pressure rather than pain.

Will people notice my crown?

Modern ceramic and zirconia crowns are shade-matched to your teeth, so in most cases no one can tell.

What if my crown comes off?

Keep it safe and call the clinic; it can often be re-cemented.
